QUILT Q&A

Cost
  • How much does a custom quilt cost?  Upcycled Designs offer two quilt sizes.  An extra large lap quilt (60" x 60") is $180 plus shipping.  A lap quilt (48" x 48") is $150 plus shipping.

Process
  • Should I cut the shirts before sending?  No!  Send us the whole t-shirt.  Upcycled Designs will do all of the cutting.

  • Can I send you clothing other than t-shirts?  No.  We are a t-shirt only kinda place.  We stay true to the cuddly nature of t-shirts.

  • How many t-shirts do I need to send for an XL Lap Quilt (60" x 60")?  In order to make your quilt, we need 16 usable 15.5" t-shirt blocks. Sixteen blocks can come from 8 t-shirts (if both sides of each shirt are used) or 16 t-shirts (if only one side of each shirt is used).  Tell us what you have in mind by putting a masking tape X on any side of the t-shirts you DON'T want us to use.  Make certain that each shirt measures at least 16" across the chest (sleeve seam to sleeve seam) so that a 15.5" square can be cut from it.  If a 15.5" block cannot be cut from a t-shirt, a smaller block will be cut and then appliqued onto a 15.5" block for an additional $15/block.

  • How many t-shirts do I need to send for a Lap Quilt (48" x 48")?  In order to make the quilt, we need 16 usable 12.5" t-shirt blocks. Sixteen blocks can come from 8 t-shirts (if both sides of each shirt are used) or 16 t-shirts (if only one side of each shirt is used).  Tell us what you have in mind by putting a masking tape X on any side of the t-shirts you DON'T want us to use.  Make certain that each shirt measures at least 13" across the chest (sleeve seam to sleeve seam), so that a 12.5" square can be cut from it.  If a 12.5" block cannot be cut from a t-shirt, a smaller block will be cut and then appliqued onto a 12.5" block for an additional $15/block.

  • How long does it take to make my quilt?  We will deliver your quilt within 6-8 weeks of the time we receive your shirts.  Some exceptions may apply during peak periods such as Christmas and graduation seasons.

Materials
  • Is the quilt machine washable? Of course!   Wash your quilt in cold or warm water and tumble dry.  No bleach.

  • What kind of fabric is used? Your t-shirts are used to make the quilt top.  Soft, cuddly fleece is used for the quilt back.  The quilt is machine sewn together in a criss cross pattern with cotton thread.

  • Is there a border on the quilt?  No.  The quilt is assembled without a border.

  • Is interfacing or stabilizer used on the t-shirts?  Interfacing or stabilizer can make the t-shirts stiff.  Stiff t-shirts are not cuddly!  We assemble the t-shirts and then use a criss cross pattern to quilt the layers together.  The criss cross stitching maintains the shape of the shirts for years to come.

  • Is there sashing between the t-shirts?  No.  The t-shirts are sewn together without fabric strips (sashing) between the shirts.

  • Will I get the unused parts of my t-shirts back?  No.  We scrap the unused portion of the t-shirts.

  • Can I pick the color of the fleece backing?  Yes!  When you order your quilt, you can choose a color from the drop-down menu.  There are many colors to choose from.

  • I've still got questions, how do I reach you?  Just send us an email at upcycleddesigns1@gmail.com
